Hog Plums Raita

  • – 1) 6 to 7 hog plums,
  • – 2) 1 cup fresh coconut ( scrapped ),
  • – 3) 4 red chilies or 4 green chilies,
  • – 4) 1 teaspoon coriander seeds ( if using red chilies ) OR 1 teaspoon cumin seeds ( if using green chilies),
  • – 5) 4 curry leaves,
  • – 6) half teaspoon rice,
  • – 7) 2 teaspoon oil,
  • – 8) ½ teaspoon mustard seeds,
  • – 9) ½ teaspoon asafetida and ½ teaspoon turmeric powder,
  • – 10) salt to taste,
  • – 11) Sugar as per taste.

Directions :-

 

  • – 1) Peel the hog plums, using potato peeler.
  • – 2) Roast the coriander OR cumin seeds. ( whichever you are using.)
  • – 3) Grind coconut, chilies, coriander OR cumin seeds and rice to a very fine paste. ( As per Goan standards it should be as fine as sandalwood paste.)
  • – 4) Heat oil and when it is hot add mustard seeds, when they splutter add asafetida, turmeric and curry leaves.
  • – 5) Add the hog plums and fry for a while and then add two cups water.
  • – 6) Cover and let the plums cook. ( 2 to 3 minutes.)
  • – 7) Then add the coconut paste and little water.
  • – 8) Add salt and sugar as per taste, and let it boil for a minute or two.

This raita tastes great with rice or chapatti.
